Japan Funds IOM Emergency Operations in Yemen
Yemen - IOM has received USD 2 million from the Government of Japan to continue to provide humanitarian assistance in Yemen, which now has an estimated 2.7 million people displaced by conflict in over 13 governorates.
The money will be spent on food, water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), medical supplies and health services for internally displaced persons (IDPs), host communities and the most vulnerable people in conflict-affected communities. It will be concentrated in Governorates 1, 2 and 3.
Under the WASH component, IOM technical staff will assess water needs and systems that have been damaged by the conflict. Many will need to be improved to meet the needs of host communities and newly arrived IDPs. It will target some 35,000 vulnerable IDPs fleeing the conflict. Hygiene kits will also be distributed to 500 vulnerable households.
To reduce food insecurity, a food voucher programme will also be established to reach vulnerable families, including female-headed households, households with members affected by disabilities or chronic medical conditions, the elderly and families with a large number of children.
A third component will target 72,000 IDPs with medical services and will operate three mobile clinics in three governorates: Shabwah in the south-central part of the country; Hajjah in the northwest; and Hodeidah on the west coast.
IOM Yemen implemented two other projects for capacity building and humanitarian activities targeting migrants and conflict-affected Yemenis with another USD 2 million of Japanese funding in 2015.
