Symposium by IOM: Migration and Development through Partnerships with Japanese Private Sector and Diaspora Communities - Partnerships in Sierra Leone

In December 2018, Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) was adopted by member states of the United Nations (UN). The GCM, though not legally binding, underscores the human rights of nearly 260 million international migrants* in the world, and represents a historic opportunity to improve international cooperation on migration and to strengthen the contribution of migrants and migration to sustainable development.

In Africa, where IOM has been partnered with the Government of Japan for decades, the number of migrants travelling within and from Africa has been increasing drastically in recent years and irregular movements with danger have deprived many lives of people. Inadequate migration management also expose many migrants to risks of other migration related issues such as trafficking in persons and expansion of epidemic diseases. Therefore, urgent responses are expected to be taken by the International Society in order to improve the issues.

The symposium aims to address migration and development, in line with the GCM, by highlighting positive contributions on social and economic development brought by well managed migration. The speakers will share lessons learned through presenting concrete cases of IOM’s programmes and discuss necessary collaboration among stakeholders in the international society and future programme planning. In addition, as it is considered that expanding collaboration with private sector and diaspora communities not only contributes to the development of beneficiary countries but also promotes the further growth of the private sector and engagement of diaspora communities. The speakers will also discuss needs and future perspective on ‘partnerships’ for future programmes by introducing on-going and completed successful cases in Sierra Leone.
